Redbrick University

Nickname applied to a number of English universities that were established in the industrial cities at the beginning of the 20th century. The oldest of the new institutions was Manchester's Victoria University, which was founded in 1880 and had additional colleges in Liverpool and Leeds. Other "redbricks" include the Universities of Birmingham, Sheffield and Bristol. The name is derived from the distinctive use of red brick for many of the new buildings.
