Judith Butler

Born 24 February 1956 in Ohio. Philosopher, activist and cultural icon.

They studied at the Yale University, where they received their Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in philosophy. After their degree, they began their doctoral studies and obtained their PhD in 1978. Butler was already an activist in their student days; they still fight for equal rights for women and want to give women a much more important role (cf. Duignan 21). In one of their speeches, they mentioned that they do not identify as a woman, as they are non-binary. They are currently engaged to Wendy Brown, also a feminist, and they have a son together. Beyond their life as an activist, they are teaching philosophy at the University of California. Moreover, they wrote several books dealing with diversity and, in particular, the role of women in our society. Their most well-known books are: Bodies That Matter (1996) and Gender Trouble (1990). Likewise, it must also be emphasized that they dealt with postculturalism in other books that focus on cultural as well as social science issues (cf. Duigan 23).
