Edward Montague

1625-1672. First Earl of Sandwich. Admiral. He first supported the Commonwealth regime, participating in the famous battles at Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby (1645). After Cromwell's death he was among those who supported and worked for the Restoration of Charles II to the English throne. For this, he was made Earl of Sandwich. He died in battle during the third Dutch War.

Also known as the patron ("my Lord") of Samuel Pepys.
