The Queen (film)
Movie about the tragic death of Lady Diana on August 31, 1997 and the reaction of the Queen. Directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Morgan.
When Lady Diana, ex-wife of Prince Charles, dies in a car accident, the whole world is grieving for the famous and much-loved woman. The whole world? Not quite. Queen Elisabeth II (Helen Mirren) and her family are staying at Balmoral Castle, unable of showing any sign of grief for the dead princess in front of the public. For the press, that is just what they were waiting for to prove the cold and emotional distance of the royal family. The newly elected prime minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) sees a public-relations disaster coming and tries to lead the queen to address the public and make a statement in tribute to Lady Diana. When even Prince Charles (Alex Jennings) cannot seem to persuade his mother, Tony Blair has to find a way to bring the queen closer to her people again.
For her convincing portrayal of Queen Elisabeth II, Hellen Mirren won the Oscar for best actress in a leading role. The film was also nominated for 5 more academy awards, among them best motion picture and best original screenplay. It had a production budget of 15,000,000$.
