"The Queen" is a movie about the tragic death of Lady Diana on August 31, 1997. It was directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Morgan. When Lady Diana, ex-wife of Prince Charles, dies in a car accident, the whole world is grieving for the famous and much-loved woman. Meanwhile, Queen Elisabeth II. (Helen Mirren) including her family, is staying at Balmoral Castle, unable of showing any sign of grieve for the dead princess in front of the public. For the Press, that is just what they were waiting for to prove the cool emotional distance of the royal family. The newly ordained prime minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) sees a public-relations disaster coming and now tries to lead the queen to adress the public and make a statement in tribute to Lady Diana. When even Prince Charles (ALex Jennings) cannot seem to persuade his mother, Tony Blair has to find a way to bring the queen closer to her people again. For her convinging portrayal of Queen Elisabeth II., Hellen Mirren won the Oscar for best actress in a leading role. The film was also nominated for 5 more academy awards, among them best motion picture and best original screenplay. It had a production budget of 15,000,000$.
