Hung parliament

Parliament in which no party has an absolute majority of seats (i.e. half of the seats plus one). This was the case after the General Elections in 2010. Hence the coalition government of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats), but historically it is a fairly rare affair: the first-past-the-post voting system usually has the effect that most Members of Parliament belong to either one of the two major parties.
