The Beggar's Opera

Written in 1728, a satirical ballad opera by John Gay. Hugely popular in its own day, it became the model for numerous adaptations, among them a version by the composer Benjamin Britten (1948) and the play, Dreigroschenoper (1928), by Bert Brecht.
