Outcome of the Treaties
The Treaties reinstated the pre-war territorial borders (Sutherland 2006). France’s King Louis XIV kept some of his achievements made during the war, among others Alsace. However, he had to give up Lorraine, as well as all acquirements on the East bank of the Rhine. Furthermore, he accepted William as the rightful ruler of England. The Dutch obtained a fortress system in the Spanish Netherlands, helping to protect and stabilize their borders (National Army Museum). The Peace was not maintained for long, however, as the war between France and England continued in 1702, in the War of Spanish Succession (Sutherland 2006).
